<image:title>Acupuncture - Acupuncture</image:title>
<image:caption>Acupuncture is a component of the health care system of China that can be traced back at least 2,500 years. In that time a wealth of knowledge has accumulated in the practice of acupuncture. Acupuncture is based on the traditional theory that there are patterns of energy flow through the body. Disruptions of this energy flow can impact your mental and physical health. Using specific diagnostic techniques, the acupuncturist chooses and stimulates certain acupuncture points to help the body’s ability to resist or overcome illnesses. The World Health Organization reviewed and analyzed a multitude of studies investigating the efficacy of acupuncture, and concluded that there is a therapeutic effect of acupuncture for almost 100 different diseases, ailments or conditions. At Nurture we use thin, sterile, disposable acupuncture needles to help our patients using this ancient Chinese medicine. Our patients find their sessions to be pleasant and restorative. We use acupuncture based on traditional Chinese medical theory as well as current research, since we believe that the the 2,500 years of informal research along with the scientific research done in the last 50 years allows us to help our patients most effectively. We also include adjunctive traditional therapies with our acupuncture treatments. Sometimes cupping, gua sha or moxa is used in the treatment or managements of certain conditions or disorders.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Chinese herbs differ from western herbs in that they are almost always prescribed as a formula containing 4 – 15 herbs rather than singularly. The formulations we prescribe at Nurture are in either pill, tincture, or granular form. Most of the time we customize formulas to fit patients’ constitutional needs. Additionally, for our women’s health patients, we also provide formulas that follow the phases of their menstrual cycle. We do not use any controversial herbs, such as herbs derived from endangered species, and all of our herbal companies that we source our herbs from follow Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and test for heavy metals, pesticides, and microbials.</image:caption>

<image:title>Fertility - FSH</image:title>
<image:caption>Diminished Ovarian Reserve and High Follicle Stimulating Hormone As women age, ovarian reserve (the capacity of the ovary to produce viable eggs) naturally decreases. Many times, this coincides with an increased production of FSH, which is a hormone that is released from the pituitary gland that stimulates the maturation of eggs. An elevated level of FSH along with other indicators, is associated with decreased fertility as the eggs become less receptive to FSH as they age. Many women with this Western medical diagnosis will be advised to use donor eggs. Many times, the underlying root of these problems, is years of stress, overworking, and lack of sleep. Nourishing the body and helping with the depletion that we typically see with these patients can be very helpful in their journey, whether they decide to use donor eggs, undergo IVF with their own eggs, or try to conceive naturally. We enjoy working with our patients and their reproductive endocrinologists to determine the best course of action.</image:caption>

<image:title>Fertility - Male Factor Infertility</image:title>
<image:caption>Male factor infertility accounts for 40% of couples struggling to conceive. Even if our male patient’s sperm parameters are within normal limits, the bar set for those limits is actually quite low. It is our belief, and has been shown at some of the larger reproductive acupuncture clinics in the country, that if we are able to treat the male partner in the fertility-challenged couple, we can achieve higher pregnancy rates, lower miscarriage rates, and healthier births. Because of this belief we offer a free initial consult and treatment for male patients whose partners are already patients at Nurture.</image:caption>

<image:title>Fertility - IVF/IUI Support</image:title>
<image:caption>Multiple studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of acupuncture used in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF). Acupuncture can improve success rates of these interventions by increasing blood flow to the ovaries and uterus, and even improving the efficacy of the medications administered. Undergoing these procedures can be stressful, and acupuncture has been shown to lower stress levels and reduce anxiety. There are many studies in the leading reproductive journal Fertility and Sterility linking high stress to lower rates of success of assisted reproductive technologies. Our goal at Nurture is to assist you in this process so you can feel supported, reassured, and at ease. We work with patients closely during these cycles, in order to time treatments appropriately around the time of embryo transfer. * LGBT- At Nurture we understand that there are unique challenges facing gay and lesbian couples who are trying to have a baby. In most cases, the individual, or couples, are not affected by medical infertility but must use IUIs, IVF or surrogacy to have the healthy baby they desire. We are here to support you in your journey and can help customize a treatment plan that fits your needs.</image:caption>

<image:title>Preconception Program - Female</image:title>
<image:caption>According to Chinese and western medicine, the most important time to boost fertility and optimize the health of your baby is during the 3-6 months before conception occurs. Treatment during this time period is designed to nourish your body, improve egg quality, and strengthen the uterus and ovaries by increasing blood flow. Our Preconception Program uses a combination of fertility acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet therapy, and lifestyle counseling that are specifically designed to balance your reproductive hormones and create the best possible environment for your eggs to grow and develop. This also provides the optimal landscape for fertilization, implantation, and the development of a healthy baby. The goal of our preconception program is to identify key indicators that tell us your body is healthy and ready for conception. Some of the things we may be asking you to track include cervical mucus, basal body temperatures, and cycle length.</image:caption>

<image:title>Preconception Program - Male</image:title>
<image:caption>When dealing with issues like sperm motility, sperm morphology, and sperm count, it is important to understand that treatments affecting sperm quality in both Chinese medicine and Western medicine can take a minimum of 3-4 months, as spermatogenesis (the production of sperm) takes approximately 74 days. With our male Preconception Program we use this timeframe to work with our patients to ensure their sperm quality and overall health is at its best before they start trying to conceive.</image:caption>

<image:title>Women's Health - Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)</image:title>
<image:caption>PMS is a group of symptoms that can include anxiety, depression, irritability, digestive issues, breast distention, and low energy. The symptoms usually begin 1 to 2 weeks before the start of the period. In our society PMS is something that is very prevalent, and can range from being a nuisance to, in some cases, debilitating. Many women feel powerless to control their feelings and emotions during this time. Chinese medicine links this disorder with high stress levels, frustration or anger, inappropriate food choices, and overall imbalance. When patients begin treatment with us, the resolution or improvement of these symptoms is typically one of the first things they notice.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pregnancy Support - Pregnancy Support</image:title>
<image:caption>Our job at Nurture isn’t complete once our patients become pregnant. Sometimes during pregnancy, certain health problems flare up (allergies, asthma, headaches, joint pain) and our goal is to help you through your pregnancy, keeping you as comfortable and as healthy as possible. We believe that trying to help our patients with natural therapies can only be beneficial for both the mother and the fetus. Part of our goal at Nurture is to help address pregnancy-related symptoms while minimizing the use of medications (either prescription or over-the-counter). As you approach your due date, we can help you prepare you (mentally and physically) for labor. We regularly receive phone calls asking for help with both breech presentations as well as to help with “induction.” Induction is a western medical term referring to procedures used to begin or advance labor, exclusively performed by a medical doctor or nurse-midwife. At Nurture, we create an optimal environmental for the baby to either turn or for the body to begin the process of labor naturally. Acupuncture allows the body to relax which, if you and your baby are ready, then allows the flow of oxytocin to begin the start of contractions.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Chinese culture the post-partum period, especially the first 30 days after birth, is an important time for the mother to gather strength and rest after her labor and delivery. Many women in Hong King, Taiwan, and mainland China still practice some variation of this practice called “Sitting the Moon.” At Nurture we encourage our patients to take the time they need to recover, and even offer home-visits to our patients after their births to help with healing and recuperation. Many problems that arise in the post-partum period with regards to Chinese medicine diagnosis stems from the blood loss that can occur during birth. Insufficient milk supply, post-partum depression, and anxiety are all problems that we have very effectively helped our patients with.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when people think of acupuncture is pain relief, and that is for a good reason. Acupuncture has been shown to help relieve both chronic and acute pain and in some cases, better than pain medication. It also comes without the side effects of pain medication. Some common pain conditions we treat include but are not limited to: back pain, neck pain, knee pain, osteoarthritis, migraines, carpal tunnel, and plantar fascitis.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Licensed Acupuncturist and Herbalist Hedy Herrick began her second career as a practitioner of Chinese medicine in New York City after completing a four-year Masters of Science in Traditional Oriental Medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) in San Diego and New York City. While there, Hedy ran a successful private acupuncture and herbology practice in Manhattan while also working at a community acupuncture clinic in Brooklyn. She gained invaluable experience treating a diverse population of patients with a wide range of health conditions. After relocating to Massachusetts, Hedy met Libby and immediately knew that Nurture was the right place for her to begin the next phase of her career. Prior to these endeavors, Hedy wasn’t always a healthcare practitioner. She majored in economics in her undergraduate years at the University of Rochester, and shortly after began climbing the corporate ladder in Boston. Meanwhile, Hedy was experiencing her own health struggles for which she was unable to find relief through the modern healthcare system. That led to her discovery of Chinese Medicine, and she became thirsty to learn more. After years of feeling somewhat unfulfilled with her corporate career, she left it behind to pursue her degree in acupuncture and herbal medicine. She hasn’t looked back since, as being able to help others has proven to be more gratifying than she could have ever imagined. Hedy currently lives in Bolton, MA with her husband and two sons. She has a continuous desire to learn more about Chinese medicine and general well-being. She loves cooking, being outside, yoga, pilates, and spending quality time with friends and family.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Gua Sha is an ancient therapy where a practitioner uses various instruments to gently “scrape” well lubricated skin until therapeutic petechiae (or “sha”) appear. Like cupping, this produces an anti-inflammatory and immune protective effect to the body. Gua sha can be used for immediate relief of pain, stiffness, fever, chills, cough, sore throat, etc.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cupping, Gua Sha, and Moxibustion - Cupping</image:title>
<image:caption>Cupping is an ancient therapy where glass cups are applied to the skin using some form of suction, usually created through heat or reverse mechanical pressure. The cups help reduce local inflammation, reduce pain, and improve circulation to the area. Most often cupping is used to help treat muscular pain, though it can also be used to treat other conditions such as cough and asthma.</image:caption>

<image:title>Cupping, Gua Sha, and Moxibustion - Moxibustion</image:title>
<image:caption>Moxibustion is Chinese Medicine therapy where heat is applied to certain points on the body in order to warm the body, remove stagnation, and improve circulation. The Chinese herb Artemisia Vulgaris is used to produce this warming material, also known as "moxa." The wool from the leaves of this plant is used to make moxa cones or sticks. Moxa can be applied to the body directly, on top of an acupuncture needle, or from a distance using a moxa stick. It produces a pleasant and warming sensation, and is often use to enhance the effect of acupuncture treatments.</image:caption>

We use acupuncture based on traditional Chinese medical theory as well as current research, since we believe that the the 2,500 years of informal research along with the scientific research done in the last 50 years allows us to help our patients most effectively. We also include adjunctive traditional therapies with our acupuncture treatments. <image:caption>For thousands of years, Chinese medicine has been used not only when a certain condition arises, but as a preventative form of medicine. Many people are functioning throughout their day without a diagnosed condition, however they do not feel they are thriving or feeling as well as they perhaps used to feel. They may have a condition such as “IBS” that has no specific treatment. They may not sleep very well or they may get frequent headaches. They may feel anxious or stressed often. We can help with all of these more vague conditions. In fact, this is where Chinese medicine really thrives. Through our in depth intake, we can diagnose subtle imbalances in the body and help correct them to restore the body’s own homeostastis, or ability to naturally heal itself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Lacey Sellati - Lacey Sellati, RN, LicAc, PA-C</image:title>
<image:caption>Lacey began her career in medicine with a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Simmons College. As a nurse, she was drawn to more holistic approaches to healing, and resonated deeply with Complementary and Alternative Medicines. Seeking to enhance her knowledge beyond Western Medicine, she pursued the study of Acupuncture and completed her Masters Degree at the New England School of Acupuncture in 2009. She operated a wellness spa in Brookline, MA for several years, where she offered natural approaches to achieving wellness both inside and out. Continuing her growth in the healing arts, Lacey pursued Physician Assistant Studies at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences University, graduating with a focus in Dermatology and Aesthetic Medicine. As a Physician Assistant, Lacey saw countless patients with dermatological conditions that were often due to reactions to products in their environment, certain lifestyle practices, or mental-emotional stresses. This reignited her drive to explore treatment approaches that got to the core of health issues, addressed imbalances, and helped redirect the body to heal itself. With this renewed perspective, Lacey sought a return to holistic medicine that was more fulfilling and authentic to her. This is what led her back to the world of Acupuncture, and eventually to Libby and Nurture Acupuncture. Lacey is honored to be a part of the Nurture team, where she can use her clinical knowledge and her passion for healing to assist others with their wellness goals. Lacey also enjoys formulating natural skin and body care products for her business BODY & BOTANY, and spending time with her husband and fur babies (including a mini-pig named Simon).</image:caption>
