Happy New Year! I am very excited to start the new year by posting a testimonial that one of my patients wrote about her success getting pregnant with acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
“My husband and I married on 8/26/11. I was 29, and my husband was 26. We were so excited to begin trying to conceive. I assumed it would be fast, and I would be pregnant in no time. People told me it may take up to a year. I tracked my periods with an app and even tested for ovulation. Yet, month after month, I was not pregnant. After a year, we went to the specialist.
We did all kinds of testing. All tests looked fine. My cycles were slightly irregular –sometimes 28 days and sometimes close to 40 days. The only explanation the doctor had was “subtle ovulatory dysfunction.” I tried taking Clomid for 3 cycles, hoping to produce more eggs and up our chances. The doctors easily regulated my cycles with the Clomid, etc. After 3 cycles of Clomid, we still weren’t pregnant. The next recommendation was IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) aka get the sperm really close to the eggs manually. We tried 3 cycles of IUI, and we still did not have luck. I was distraught, not understanding what could possibly be wrong. The doctor didn’t really know what was wrong either.
The next step was IVF. I had always feared having to do IVF, but we really wanted to get pregnant. With our first IVF try, we were all shocked and saddened when we had failed fertilization. I thought we must be doomed. Our sperm and eggs didn’t like each other?! With our 2nd IVF try, we did ICSI, which is when they manually insert a single sperm into each egg. Everything went as well as could go, but we did not get pregnant. We repeated the IVF with ICSI again, and yet again, no success.
By this time, it was February 2014, and I was emotionally and physically exhausted from all the stress, distress, hormones, procedures, explanations to friends and family, and the aching, never-ending questions. Why, why, why? It hurt so much to see pregnant women, babies, and hear about others’ success. Someone suggested taking a break from IVF and trying alternative medicine such as acupuncture. I was scared and felt hopeless, but I took a chance.
I went to see Libby in April 2014. I told myself to focus on being well, and getting pregnant would just be a wonderful bonus. I had my doubts, but I didn’t stop believing that it could work. Never stop believing! I began seeing Libby weekly for a treatment, and I began taking Chinese herbs daily. I changed my diet as well, based on Libby’s recommendations.
I loved my weekly acupuncture treatments! My husband began taking herbs as well. I started to worry less and less about getting pregnant. I felt so much better overall. I even lost more than 10 lbs without really trying. I still wanted a baby more than anything though, of course.
In September 2014, something absolutely miraculous happened. We conceived naturally! We were just about to do another IVF round, this time with Libby’s help at the same time. However, there was no need for a 4th IVF treatment. With Libby’s help, we achieved more than we could have hoped for, and we will be forever grateful to her and to acupuncture. Never give up, and keep your mind and spirit open to the infinite possibilities.”
